Is there a Doctor in the house, I have an eggbeater that needs Duct Tape

One of my many problems during last weekend?s race was that I kept popping out of my pedals. This has never happened to me before and I have been using Crank Brothers Eggbeater since they came on the market. I have a nice historical collection now and I race with a pair that is two years old. I use them just for cross racing so they don?t get yearlong use. Every year I put new cleats in.

So what was different, the shoes! Those beautiful Lake Mountain bike shoes. My last two pairs of Lake Shoes have worked flawlessly with the respective Eggbeaters of those years but the new Lake shoes have a less chunky tread!

Bring on the Duct Tape. This was news to me. I needed to make up the space between the pedal body (the space on either side of the spring) and the tread on my shoes. As it was, I was floating on my cleats and that was giving me a lot of play. Now the new Eggbeaters with the round body can now be adapted with a kit from Crank brothers that is basically arched little plastic shims that snap onto the pedal body to shim it up. If you have the Eggbeaters with the corrugated groves on the body then you have to do it on your own. If you google Eggbeaters and Duct Tape you will see some fix?s including super glue and sand layered on.

So if you use Sidi shoes then you would probably never know about this as that?s the size format that Crankbrothers use. Perhaps an industry standard cleat plate to tread height would be helpful. Call you favorite bike shoe maker and lets? get this organized!!.

Here?s some pictures of my temporally fix. The tape only last a few engage / disengage movements before it starts coming off. I put a bit of epoxy glue around the outside of the tape to help keep it on.

If you know a better way to shim these puppies up ? please, let me know.

Great, now I need an eye patch just before Halloween.

When Paul (the guy you help build the course) puts in a mouth guard at the start line, it’s not a good sign.

So as a warning to all, wear your eye protection. A pine tree just about took me out for the season.

Jungle cross in Minnesota with all these pine trees is dangerous. Finished 7th, getting poked in the eye on the second lap really messed up my depth perception.

Black light shows the scratch across my left eye in the center. No wonder it’s all blurry.

Cyclocross Conspiracy 45+

First 2011 Cross race for me, the new Kona Major Jake and those flashy white Lake shoes. I am very happy to say we all did well. I had only been on the new bike for a quick ride around the neighborhood the day before so my pre-ride of the course resulted in a quick pit stop into the Freewheel tuck before the race as my cassette was loose and rattling around.

Not a big group at the start even with the 55+ added in.

My start was MUCH better than last year when I missed clipping in and my left eggbeater turned into a shin peeler and took my out of the race and into the hospital. This year I was free and clear.

The course was much the same as the last few years with the added element of acorn’s littering the hair pin turns around the oak trees, those little buggers act just like marbles.

No run-ups this year as the ‘hill’ had enough of an approach that it was possible to ride it.

Charles Townsend form the 55+ passed me with I think 3 to go and I just could match his power on the open sections. He took first with me second taking the podium for the 45+.

Again, with the CJ and Josh

MN Syndicate’s Josh and CJ are killing it. Last night they might-as-well had a book club they way they lead the 35+ race; nothing but smiles and chit chat while the rest of us died.

Then in the 1/2/3′s It was the two of them against the mighty DS. What for these two on a podium near you.

2010 Season

Thanks to all the Crossniacs across the country for your continued support of our great cause. We got some really good coverage at nationals with Dave Towle basically giving us a 10 minute commercial as CJ dominated the B race. And when I came across the line in the single speed race, the announcer said “it wouldn’t be a race unless the Crossniacs were represented”. We have definitely put a mark on the cross season and I want to thank all of you for that. We have had some awesome results this year, but more importantly we have continued the mission of spreading the love of cross. So, now that the season is wrapped up start thinking of how we can become better and more awesome for 2011. Start recruiting and we will get going on the kit order this summer so we will have our kits in time for the 2011 season.

Rock on

Wah

This why we love cross and why the MN crew chose Hollywood Cycles for a sponsor
